NASCAR And Drug Abuse
By :
Jeremy Dunn
For the most part, NASCAR has simply not faced the issue of drug use like other professional sports. It was in 1988 that Tim Richmond, a 13-time race winner, who made the news for his suspension due to his failure to pass a sanctioned drug test. He drove for Hendrick Motorsports and appeared to be on his way to superstardom, becoming a regular fixture on the
nascar schedule
. Richmond, however, denied the drug abuse, and it was later stated that medications to suppress cold symptoms triggered the positive result. NASCAR did not want Richmond in the sport at that time. He was losing weight due to an illness, but unbeknownst to NASCAR, Richmond was dying of AIDS. NASCAR remained convinced that Richmond's weight loss and other odd symptoms were the result of using drugs, and rumors supported this belief.
Richmond passed away in 1989 from AIDS-related complications.
Twenty years after Richmond was booted out of NASCAR, only a small number of NASCAR drivers have come under fire from racing officials for illegal substance abuse. Shane Hmiel, Kevin Grubb, Tyler Walker, and Aaron Fike have been suspended in recent years. Grubb and Hmiel received lifetime bans after failing drug tests following reinstatements from a previous suspension due to drugs.
Hmiel is the son of Steve Hmiel, a veteran mechanic who has worked for companies such as Roush Racing, Dale Earnhardt Inc., and Chip Ganassi Racing in recent years. Hmiel was a racer with serious talent and many described him as one of the more talented rookie drivers of the last decade, but his substance abuse issues were the undoing of his promising future in racing.
Grubb was another hot young driver back in the late 1990s. Grubb enjoyed moderate success in the Busch, now Nationwide Series before failing a drug test in 2003. While he was reinstated three years later, Grubb was again suspended in 2007. Grubb committed suicide in May 2009, drying of gunshot wound to the head.
Tyler Walker, good friend to Sprint Cup Series star Kasey Kahne, failed a drug test and was suspended in 2006. Tyler has yet to file for NASCAR reinstatement.
For Aaron Fike, NASCAR suspension only came after a theme park arrest for heroin possession. Later, in an interview with ESPN's 'The Magazine,' Fike said that he was using heroin on race day. Needless to say, the Fike interview was a shocking blow to NASCAR.
Until the 2009 season, NASCAR only screened drivers under reasonable suspicion. Now, NASCAR randomly tests all drivers and crewmembers throughout the season through Aegis Science Corp. Labs with Dr. David Black monitoring the procedures.
A small number of crewmembers have been suspended following positive drug test results.
On May 9, 2009 at Darlington Raceway, Jeremy Mayfield became the biggest name since Tim Richmond to receive an indefinite suspension after testing positive. Mayfield has said repeatedly that the positive test is a result of combination of Claritin-D allergy medicine and an unnamed but legal prescription drug. However, NASCAR and Dr. Black have publicly ruled out Mayfield's claim.
Maintaining his innocence, Mayfield has hired attorney Bill Dielh. There could be lawsuit against NASCAR coming up very soon.
NASCAR has not publicly disclosed the substance that is in question, and even Mayfield has expressed ignorance regarding the drug. He and his lawyer received reports earlier in the week.
Essentially, it comes down as Mayfield's word against the NASCAR officials, and the case will probably be resolved outside of court. This latest event has many turning a critical eye towards NASCAR. Yet, the coverage has not affected the
nascar schedule
. The Mayfield story has cast a long shadow over any news in NASCAR that could become good points. Much of this is about the fact that drug issues are still a rarer thing in NASCAR than they are in the NBA, NFL, MLB, or the NHL.
Changing from the reasonable able suspicion approach to drug testing to the random format was a good move on NASCAR's part. However, NASCAR does not provide a list of banned drugs, which is one major flaw in this process. The management of NASCAR would like to be in control of this list. By having the list available to drivers and crewmembers would help them to understand their limitations.
Just like all other major sports, there is no allowance for drugs in NASCAR.
