Calories Will Be Counted In New York

By: Robert William Locke

Why should calorie counting preoccupy The New York Health Board so much and why is it going to become law by April 2008? At least it will be compulsory for chain restaurants with 15 or more outlets to display all the calorie information for every item on their menus.

The Health Board is hoping that this new regulation will help customers make healthy choices when they see how many calories they are about to consume. In this way they hope to make a contribution to the growing problem of obesity (latest figures are at a staggering 65%!) and thus reduce the incidence of heart disease and diabetes. They are now gathering comments and there will be a public hearing in January 2008.

Does calorie counting really work? Dieticians tell us that it is an essential tool in calculating how much is going into our bodies and how many calories we are then using up though physical activity. This is why it is so useful not only for getting rid of weight at the start of the program but in keeping it off in the long term and we are talking about years here. Everyone will have a limit of daily calories which will be vital in reaching their goals.

Dieting by counting calories means there are no forbidden foods - everything is allowed - as long as you eat less calories than you burn up each day you will see the weight come off. But you really have to know what is going inside your stomach and what your body is doing to burn those calories.

Recent surveys show that fast food chains are not displaying calorie information prominently although many do so on their tray liners and so on. People found that the information was not obvious. They also found that a third of the items on a lunch menu contained over 1,000 calories which is half the amount you would normally eat in a day !

Are people really going to read all this information on the menu, if this becomes law? Apparently yes, as the survey found that people really do use this information and it helps them to make a healthy choice. When the information is NOT available, they found that 1 in 10 people were making big errors in calculating their calorie intake - sometimes by as much as 600 !

As regards food shopping it seems that people are becoming more aware of what they are buying. It seems that up to 75% will look at the calorie information on the package and that about 50% say that this will determine whether they buy it or not !

The Mediterranean Diet counts its calories too but it much easier as all the foods are healthy in themselves. This diet has been studied for years worldwide by prestigious institutes who are curious to know why people in the Mediterranean areas have a lower incidence of heart disease and diabetes, not to mention that obesity is much less of a problem.
